Climate

The island is situated at latitude 24deg South and has a warm temperate island climate with SW trade winds consistently blowing for about seven months of the year from May - November. The period from December - April is characterised by higher temperatures, less stable humid air masses and sometimes stormy weather. During the winter months the prevailing SW wind is pushed up by the mountains and adiabatically cooled, creating a natural climatic division on the island with the SW side of the island (to windward of Mt Eotia) being considerable wetter and a little cooler than the leeward NE side of the island (The Crow Plateau), which is warm, dry and in rain shadow for most of the year.
