The Clock

The Eotia clock was designed to run for 10,000 dry years. It's first tick was about 6,000 years ago. Eotians have cared for it ever since, and will continue to do wo until the last tick, 4,000 dry years hence. That last last tick, so Eotians believe, will mark the end of time, and hence the end of the universe.

It should be noted that the Eotian belief that the last tick coincides with the end of time is not derived from any known physical principal, nor can any reference related to this belief be found in the surviving design documents for the clock. As far as can be discerned, the original designers simply wanted to build a clock that would last at least 10,000 years, and it was only just a clock after all.

See The Long Now for a later attempt at a similar project in the wet world.
